SUMMARY:VSO at the Flynn: Love Notes
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets \nOn Valentine’s Day\, VSO welcomes Grammy Award-winning violinist Jennifer Koh to perform Philip Glass’ Violin Concerto No. 1 in an eclectic concert mixing American and Romantic music. A student of VSO’s fourth music director Jaime Laredo\, Koh is a hugely in-demand performer of contemporary violin repertoire with premieres of more than 100 works composed especially for her. Glass’ Violin Concerto No. 1\, one of the composer’s most often performed works\, is preceded by Frank Zappa’s fast-paced\, riveting piece from his 1993 album The Yellow Shark. For the romantic at heart\, lush orchestral suites from Georges Bizet’s Carmen and music by 19th C. French composer Augusta Holmès complete the afternoon concert. \nThe concert begins at 3:00 p.m. and is preceded at 2:00 p.m. by Musically Speaking\, a free pre-concert discussion hosted by Vermont Public’s Helen Lyons with Music Director Andrew Crust\, that provides entertaining insight into the evening’s program. \nTake Advantage of Special Overnight Rates! \nEnjoy the rest of your evening in Burlington with a stay at Courtyard by Marriot Burlington Harbor. SUMMARY:VSO at the Flynn: Pastoral Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets \nSubscriptions are on sale now! \nTo subscribe\, click here. \nThe natural world underscores VSO’s second concert at the Flynn October 25\, with birdsong\, thunder\, moonlight\, and mushrooms as influence for a breadth of compositions. William Grant Still’s Wood Notes is inspired by the rich nature of the American South\, and Chelsea Komschlies’ piece Mycelialore makes musical connections between fungal and neural networks in a piece commissioned by the League of American Orchestra’s Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program. The second half presents Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 “Pastorale”\, a bucolic hymn to the countryside and nature. From stillness to dancing\, and bird calls to storms\, Beethoven’s ability to incorporate rural life in musical form is exemplified in the four movements of this work. \nThe concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is preceded at 6:30 p.m. by Musically Speaking\, a free pre-concert discussion in the concert hall that provides entertaining insight into the evening’s program. \n  \nEXTRA: Vermont Wine Merchants and Vermont Symphony Orchestra team up for a pre-concert wine tasting with varietals from around the world! Join us from 6:45 – 7:30pm at The Flynn’s Chase Studio for a sampling of 6 wines including a Domaine de la Prébende Beaujolais\, a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon\, and a Cava Reserve Brut from Avinyo and more\, with insights from General Manager of Vermont Wine Merchants Drew Robinson. All proceeds benefit the VSO; $20 per person. SUMMARY:Modernism and the World of Yesterday
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets \nSCROLL DOWN FOR ADVENTURE DINNER & COURTYARD MARRIOTT PARTNER OFFERS \nSir Stephen Hough returns to Burlington for a doubleheader of two composers’ first piano concertos. Mendelssohn’s propulsive work is partnered with the East Coast premiere of Hough’s The World of Yesterday\, informed by musical sketches he composed for a WWII-era film score. \nA symphonic poem by Polish composer Wojciech Kilar\, whose movie scores include Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Portrait of a Lady\, and English composer Anna Clyne’s tempestuous Sound and Fury round out this concert. This concert is conducted by VSO Music Director Andrew Crust. \nAuthor M. T. Anderson joins the VSO as narrator for Clyne’s piece. \nOf his concerto\, Hough writes\, “The World of Yesterday … is the title of the last book by Stefan Zweig\, a memoir of his cultural life in Vienna before the First World War. I liked the instant suggestion of nostalgia with its evocation of a musical past of intense romance; and there is a section made up of a dark\, decadent Viennese waltz with variations. But also such looking backwards has hints of the piano concerto’s own past as a form. From Mozart until the mid‑20th century a composer in most cases wrote a piano concerto for him- or herself to play. It was a way to communicate musical personality and to display pianistic prowess. This is true right up to Britten\, Prokofiev\, Bartók\, Shostakovich and\, supremely\, Rachmaninov. What might it be to rediscover such a connection between creator and performer? This piece is my attempt to explore this.” \nThe concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is preceded at 6:30 p.m. by Musically Speaking\, a free pre-concert discussion that provides entertaining insight into the evening’s program with Vermont Public classical radio host Helen Lyons. \n  \nPROGRAM \nWojciech Kilar    –    Orawa\nFelix Mendelssohn    –    Concerto No. 1 for Piano and Orchestra \nIntermission \nAnna Clyne    –    Sound and Fury\nStephen Hough    –    Piano Concerto: The World of Yesterday (East Coast premiere) \n\nKick off your Saturday evening with a pre-concert art gallery cocktail party with Adventure Dinner\, just around the corner at Burlington City Arts! SUMMARY:VSO at the Flynn: A Laredo Salute
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets Here \nVermont audiences finally get to enjoy our esteemed longtime Music Director’s “farewell” concert\, originally planned for spring 2021. The program begins with the very first piece Jaime Laredo ever conducted with the VSO\, George Walker’s poignant Lyric for Strings. Violinist Bella Hristova then joins the orchestra to perform Saturn Bells\, a work written by her husband\, David Ludwig. The piece was inspired by the scientific discovery that vibrations across the surface of that icy planet cause it to resonate like a lonely cosmic bell. Hristova also solos in Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy\, a favorite of virtuoso violinists with its homage to Scottish folk melodies. The concert concludes with Brahms’ Symphony No. 1\, written after the composer overcame his reluctance to become a symphonist in Beethoven’s footsteps. This glorious musical program is a fitting symbol of what we owe this much-loved conductor\, who made the VSO what it is today. \nThe concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is preceded at 6:30 p.m. by Musically Speaking\, a free pre-concert discussion\, hosted by Helen Lyons\, that provides entertaining insight into the evening’s program. \nPROGRAM: \nWalker – Lyric for Strings  \nDavid Ludwig – Saturn Bells  \nBruch – Scottish Fantasy  \nBrahms – Symphony No. 1 \n  \n For accessibility information at this venue\, please contact The Flynn at 802-863-5966. \n \nThis concert is generously sponsored by M&T Bank\, and George Mergens Foundation. \nMs. Hristova’s performance is made possible by The Natalie Lisman Guest Soloist Fund.
