SUMMARY:VSO at the Flynn: Love Notes
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets \nOn Valentine’s Day\, VSO welcomes Grammy Award-winning violinist Jennifer Koh to perform Philip Glass’ Violin Concerto No. 1 in an eclectic concert mixing American and Romantic music. A student of VSO’s fourth music director Jaime Laredo\, Koh is a hugely in-demand performer of contemporary violin repertoire with premieres of more than 100 works composed especially for her. Glass’ Violin Concerto No. 1\, one of the composer’s most often performed works\, is preceded by Frank Zappa’s fast-paced\, riveting piece from his 1993 album The Yellow Shark. For the romantic at heart\, lush orchestral suites from Georges Bizet’s Carmen and music by 19th C. French composer Augusta Holmès complete the afternoon concert. \nThe concert begins at 3:00 p.m. and is preceded at 2:00 p.m. by Musically Speaking\, a free pre-concert discussion hosted by Vermont Public’s Helen Lyons with Music Director Andrew Crust\, that provides entertaining insight into the evening’s program. \nTake Advantage of Special Overnight Rates! \nEnjoy the rest of your evening in Burlington with a stay at Courtyard by Marriot Burlington Harbor. Our friends at Courtyard Marriott have extended a special offer for Love Notes ticket holders – just contact Dana Carver for your exclusive rate of $109 (taxes and fees included) for your Valentine’s evening stay.  \n  \n  \nPROGRAM \nAndrew Crust\, conductor\nJennifer Koh\, violin \nFrank Zappa (arr. SUMMARY:VSO at the Flynn: Pastoral Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets \nSubscriptions are on sale now! \nTo subscribe\, click here. \nThe natural world underscores VSO’s second concert at the Flynn October 25\, with birdsong\, thunder\, moonlight\, and mushrooms as influence for a breadth of compositions. William Grant Still’s Wood Notes is inspired by the rich nature of the American South\, and Chelsea Komschlies’ piece Mycelialore makes musical connections between fungal and neural networks in a piece commissioned by the League of American Orchestra’s Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program. The second half presents Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 “Pastorale”\, a bucolic hymn to the countryside and nature. From stillness to dancing\, and bird calls to storms\, Beethoven’s ability to incorporate rural life in musical form is exemplified in the four movements of this work. \nThe concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is preceded at 6:30 p.m. by Musically Speaking\, a free pre-concert discussion in the concert hall that provides entertaining insight into the evening’s program. \n  \nEXTRA: Vermont Wine Merchants and Vermont Symphony Orchestra team up for a pre-concert wine tasting with varietals from around the world! Join us from 6:45 – 7:30pm at The Flynn’s Chase Studio for a sampling of 6 wines including a Domaine de la Prébende Beaujolais\, a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon\, and a Cava Reserve Brut from Avinyo and more\, with insights from General Manager of Vermont Wine Merchants Drew Robinson. All proceeds benefit the VSO; $20 per person. Click here to purchase your ticket! \n  \nPROGRAM \nAndrew Crust\, conductor\n \nWilliam Grant Still – Wood Notes\nChelsea Komschlies – Mycelialore\n \nIntermission \nLudwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 6 “Pastorale” \n  \nThis concert is generously supported by the Vermont Community Foundation Concert Artists Fund\, Physicians Computer Company\, and the State of Vermont.  \n \n                         \n \nMycelialore was commissioned by the Virginia B.
