SUMMARY:Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS HERE \nVSO’s chamber orchestra explores new scores for two winners of the 2023 Award for Best Integration of Music into Film: Born Under Punches (written and directed by Gaoyang Ganjin) and The Social Chameleon (Alex Ross). SUMMARY:Men\, Marble\, and Machines
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS HERE \nThe Vermont Marble Museum (VMM) and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra (VSO) cordially invite you to a screening of Men\, Marble\, and Machines at the Paramount Theatre in Rutland at 7:00 p.m. on May 12\, 2023! \n\n\n\n\n\nVSO and VMM are co-hosting this event in honor of VSO past board chairs\, and VMM emeriti board co-chairs\, Robert and Victoria Young. The evening will feature the 1984 award winning documentary film\, Men\, Marble and Machines\, and a 21-piece VSO Chamber Orchestra under the direction of conductor\, Matt LaRocca\, performing works by composer Nicholas Scarim (who wrote the award-winning score for Men\, Marble and Machines). \n\n\n\nIt is not only an industry documentary – it is also an artful study of the beauty of marble\, the technological process and workmanship that transform Vermont marble into landmark structures\, national monuments\, and tactile art. The film follows marble from deep inside the vast underground Danby quarry to the Vermont Marble Company’s finishing mill in Proctor\, where cranes\, gang saws\, machines and marble workers cut\, form\, polish and carve. The striking cinematography and evocative score guide the viewer to appreciate the beauty of the process\, as well as to understand and appreciate the skills of the Vermonters who work with marble.

SUMMARY:VSO at the Flynn: A Laredo Salute
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets Here \nVermont audiences finally get to enjoy our esteemed longtime Music Director’s “farewell” concert\, originally planned for spring 2021. The program begins with the very first piece Jaime Laredo ever conducted with the VSO\, George Walker’s poignant Lyric for Strings. Violinist Bella Hristova then joins the orchestra to perform Saturn Bells\, a work written by her husband\, David Ludwig. The piece was inspired by the scientific discovery that vibrations across the surface of that icy planet cause it to resonate like a lonely cosmic bell. Hristova also solos in Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy\, a favorite of virtuoso violinists with its homage to Scottish folk melodies. The concert concludes with Brahms’ Symphony No. 1\, written after the composer overcame his reluctance to become a symphonist in Beethoven’s footsteps. This glorious musical program is a fitting symbol of what we owe this much-loved conductor\, who made the VSO what it is today. \nThe concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is preceded at 6:30 p.m. by Musically Speaking\, a free pre-concert discussion\, hosted by Helen Lyons\, that provides entertaining insight into the evening’s program. \nPROGRAM: \nWalker – Lyric for Strings  \nDavid Ludwig – Saturn Bells  \nBruch – Scottish Fantasy  \nBrahms – Symphony No. 1 \n  \n For accessibility information at this venue\, please contact The Flynn at 802-863-5966. \n \nThis concert is generously sponsored by M&T Bank\, and George Mergens Foundation. \nMs. Hristova’s performance is made possible by The Natalie Lisman Guest Soloist Fund.
