SUMMARY:Jukebox: Strength and Hope - Burlington
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets \nTHIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT \nMusic as strength. Music as hope. Music as change.  \nThroughout history\, composers have turned to music in the face of hardship—to find light in darkness\, to hold fast to truth\, to rise up\, and to offer comfort\, courage\, and strength. In this Jukebox\, we look to those composers who have created music for hope\, resistance\, and change—music composed in prison camps\, music that calls out injustice\, music that shouts dissent\, music that is charged with the need to speak out and be heard. In these challenging times\, this special concert brings us together to offer a sense of optimism borne of music and community. \nBrooke Quiggins-Saulnier and Joana Genova\, violin; Stefanie Taylor\, viola; and John Dunlop\, cello. Hosted and curated by Matt LaRocca. \n  \nPROGRAM \nRussell Peck – Don’t Tread on Me \nLudwig van Beethoven – String Quartet in C minor\, Op. 18\, No. 4 – Movement I \nEthel Smyth – String Quartet in E minor \nGideon Klein – Trio \nDmitri Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 8 in C minor\, Op. 110 \nFrank Horvat – The Thailand HRDs \nMilad Yousufi – Refugee \nZoltan Almashi – Mariupol \nWoody Guthrie – This Land is Your Land \nThis concert also provides a spotlight for Mercy Connections\, a local non-profit that supports adults as they pursue English language learning; justice\, mentoring\, and reentry guidance; tutoring; and citizenship application support. Learn more at the concert where Mercy Connection staff members can share their story! \nVSO thanks the generosity of our Burlington Jukebox sponsors Northfield Savings Bank\, Eleanor Long\, and Bob Kenny & Pat Suozzi.

SUMMARY:VSO at the Flynn: Pastoral Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets \nSubscriptions are on sale now! \nTo subscribe\, click here. \nThe natural world underscores VSO’s second concert at the Flynn October 25\, with birdsong\, thunder\, moonlight\, and mushrooms as influence for a breadth of compositions. William Grant Still’s Wood Notes is inspired by the rich nature of the American South\, and Chelsea Komschlies’ piece Mycelialore makes musical connections between fungal and neural networks in a piece commissioned by the League of American Orchestra’s Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program. The second half presents Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 “Pastorale”\, a bucolic hymn to the countryside and nature. From stillness to dancing\, and bird calls to storms\, Beethoven’s ability to incorporate rural life in musical form is exemplified in the four movements of this work. \nThe concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is preceded at 6:30 p.m. by Musically Speaking\, a free pre-concert discussion in the concert hall that provides entertaining insight into the evening’s program. \n  \nEXTRA: Vermont Wine Merchants and Vermont Symphony Orchestra team up for a pre-concert wine tasting with varietals from around the world! Join us from 6:45 – 7:30pm at The Flynn’s Chase Studio for a sampling of 6 wines including a Domaine de la Prébende Beaujolais\, a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon\, and a Cava Reserve Brut from Avinyo and more\, with insights from General Manager of Vermont Wine Merchants Drew Robinson. All proceeds benefit the VSO; $20 per person. Click here to purchase your ticket! \n  \nPROGRAM \nAndrew Crust\, conductor\n \nWilliam Grant Still – Wood Notes\nChelsea Komschlies – Mycelialore\n \nIntermission \nLudwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 6 “Pastorale” \n  \nThis concert is generously supported by the Vermont Community Foundation Concert Artists Fund\, Physicians Computer Company\, and the State of Vermont.  \n \n                         \n \nMycelialore was commissioned by the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program\, an initiative of the League of American Orchestras in partnership with the American Composers Orchestra.
