DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets \nSeptember 24 in Castleton\, Grammy Award-winning tabla player Sandeep Das and renowned composer and sitarist Rajib Karmakar come together for a free instrument demonstration and discussion on Indian music\, history\, and performance. Das and Karmakar are headlining the Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s “East Meets West” concert at The Paramount Theatre in Rutland on September 27\, and this workshop provides a rare opportunity to learn more about and hear from two internationally recognized masters of the sitar and tabla drums. \nThis event is hosted co-hosted by Vermont State University Castleton\, and is free of charge. Registration required. \nThe VSO’s September 27 concert at The Paramount Theatre features compositions by Ravi Shankar\, Dinuk Wijeratne\, and Das in the first half\, with Mussorgsky/Ravel’s Pictures at an Exhibition in the second half. Student tickets are $10\, and general admission starts at $30 plus fees/taxes.

DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets \nThe 2025-26 season opens with one of the world’s leading tabla virtuosos\, Grammy Award-winning musician Sandeep Das\, a 21-year member of the Silk Road Ensemble and collaborator with Paquito D’Rivera\, Bobby McFerrin\, Yo-Yo Ma amongst others. VSO also welcomes guest sitarist Rajib Karmakar to start the concert with the first movement of pioneering composer Ravi Shankar’s Symphony. Das follows with Sri Lankan/Canadian composer Dinuk Wijeratne’s brilliant Tabla Concerto\, a three movement exploration of baroque\, electronica\, folk\, and romantic styles. The concert completes its East/West connection with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition\, a hugely popular\, sweeping work masterfully orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. The piece gives a distinct musical voice to visual art and shows the full colors and virtuosity of the orchestra. \nThe concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is preceded at 6:30 p.m. by Musically Speaking\, a free pre-concert discussion hosted by Vermont Public’s Helen Lyons that provides entertaining insight into the evening’s program. \n  \n  \nPROGRAM \nAndrew Crust\, conductor\nSandeep Das\, tabla\nRajib Karmakar\, solo sitar \nRavi Shankar    –    Symphony (1.
