William Grant Still’s Wood Notes is inspired by the rich nature of the American South\, and Chelsea Komschlies’ piece Mycelialore makes musical connections between fungal and neural networks in a piece commissioned by the League of American Orchestra’s Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program. The second half presents Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 “Pastorale”\, a bucolic hymn to the countryside and nature. VSO also welcomes guest sitarist Rajib Karmakar to start the concert with the first movement of pioneering composer Ravi Shankar’s Symphony. Das follows with Sri Lankan/Canadian composer Dinuk Wijeratne’s brilliant Tabla Concerto\, a three movement exploration of baroque\, electronica\, folk\, and romantic styles. The concert completes its East/West connection with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition\, a hugely popular\, sweeping work masterfully orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. Mendelssohn’s propulsive work is partnered with the East Coast premiere of Hough’s The World of Yesterday\, informed by musical sketches he composed for a WWII-era film score.  \nA symphonic poem by Polish composer Wojciech Kilar\, whose movie scores include Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Portrait of a Lady\, and English composer Anna Clyne’s tempestuous Sound and Fury round out this concert. This concert is conducted by VSO Music Director Andrew Crust. \nAuthor M. T. Anderson joins the VSO as narrator for Clyne’s piece. \nOf his concerto\, Hough writes\, “The World of Yesterday … is the title of the last book by Stefan Zweig\, a memoir of his cultural life in Vienna before the First World War. I liked the instant suggestion of nostalgia with its evocation of a musical past of intense romance; and there is a section made up of a dark\, decadent Viennese waltz with variations. But also such looking backwards has hints of the piano concerto’s own past as a form. From Mozart until the mid‑20th century a composer in most cases wrote a piano concerto for him- or herself to play. It was a way to communicate musical personality and to display pianistic prowess. This is true right up to Britten\, Prokofiev\, Bartók\, Shostakovich and\, supremely\, Rachmaninov. What might it be to rediscover such a connection between creator and performer? The program begins with the very first piece Jaime Laredo ever conducted with the VSO\, George Walker’s poignant Lyric for Strings. Violinist Bella Hristova then joins the orchestra to perform Saturn Bells\, a work written by her husband\, David Ludwig. The piece was inspired by the scientific discovery that vibrations across the surface of that icy planet cause it to resonate like a lonely cosmic bell. Hristova also solos in Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy\, a favorite of virtuoso violinists with its homage to Scottish folk melodies. The concert concludes with Brahms’ Symphony No. 1\, written after the composer overcame his reluctance to become a symphonist in Beethoven’s footsteps. DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets Here \nThe VSO’s final Music Director candidate\, Andrew Crust\, has chosen a rich and varied program that explores the full range of orchestral colors. The concert begins with Oiseaux bleus et sauvages by Canadian composer Jocelyn Morlock\, a shimmering symphonic aviary showcasing the flute. The first half concludes with the Vermont premiere of Ficciones (“Fictions”)\, a brand-new concerto inspired by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges\, and composed by Latin Grammy Award-winner Roberto Sierra. Ficciones is co-commissioned by the VSO and this performance features world-class electric violin virtuoso soloist Tracy Silverman. DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets Here \nAt long last the VSO Chorus rejoins the Orchestra for a return to the Flynn including two fascinating choral works. The concert features the world premiere of Dr. Matthew Evan Taylor‘s piece\, from despair … Light!\, which forms part of his African American Requiem Series. from despair…Light! explores gospel choral traditions of hymn lining\, touching on themes of grief\, loss\, and shared healing.  Vaughan Williams’ Toward the Unknown Region\, set to poetry by Walt Whitman\, celebrates the spirit of youthful adventure. These choral pieces in the first half are accompanied by a subtly nuanced work for strings by Augusta Read Thomas\, a self-described poet-composer based in Chicago. VSO Music Director candidate James Burton concludes the evening with Dvorak’s richly melodic Symphony No. 7\, which the composer hoped would be “capable of stirring the world.” \nThe concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is preceded at 6:30 p.m. by Musically Speaking\, a free pre-concert discussion that provides entertaining insight into the evening’s program. The world premiere of Riots and Prayers by composer Daniel Bernard Roumain\, a commission spearheaded by the VSO\, The Flynn and the UVM Lane Series in 2020\, completes the concert’s first half. The composer promises an opportunity for “words\, witness\, and wonder” with a work inspired by our “divisive\, combative\, and collaborative” times. The concert closes with Sergei Prokofiev’s dramatic fifth symphony\, composed while World War II was raging as “a hymn to free and happy mankind.” \nThe concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is preceded at 6:30 p.m. by Musically Speaking\, a free pre-concert discussion that provides entertaining insight into the evening’s program. \nHave your say!
